AUSTIN-- State Representative Solomon Ortiz, Jr. (D-Corpus Christi) announced today he is joint-authoring House Resolution 671, which recognizes March 5 to March 9 as Texas Public Schools Week.
Ortiz, a former mathematics teacher, joined with other members of the House of Representatives to recognize Texas' public schools and commend them for their accomplishments.
"Our public schools are the fabric that holds communities together," Ortiz said. "As policymakers, we need to take this week to renew our commitment to Texas' public school system."
"Every day, I pick up the local paper and read things that make me proud of our public schools," Ortiz added. "Teachers, administrators, paraprofessionals, and coaches are working together to foster success for children in Corpus Christi and across the state."
The theme of this year's Public Schools Week is "One Texas, One Vision, All Children."
Ortiz also congratulated Susan Gowens, a teacher at Flour Bluff Primary, who was selected as a finalist for the Texas Teacher of the Year award.
"Outstanding teachers like Ms. Gowens should be recognized for the work they do educating our children," Ortiz said. "I commend Ms. Gowens for her exceptional service to our children and to our state."
Ortiz represents students, parents, and teachers in Corpus Christi ISD, Flour Bluff ISD, and West Oso ISD.
